When the land for San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park was first set aside for public use in the 1860s, the barren, sand-dune-filled land didn’t seem very lush or very likely as a future park. But after the city planted trees to hold the sand in place and filled the park with vegetation, the improved park became a city attraction. By 1886, cable cars helped bring more than 47,000 people to the park and attract housing developments to the western side of San Francisco. If you have the time to explore, you will find much more to do in Golden Gate Park than just feed the squirrels.
